We Are Bethel: Supporting our Families

Posted Date: 10/31/25 (10:13 AM)

Dear Bethel Families and Community,

We know that the current government shutdown — combined with recent changes to federal benefits — is creating significant challenges for many families across Oregon. Here in Bethel, we recognize the strain this places on our students, staff, and families, and we want you to know: you’re not alone. We’re here to help.

In Bethel, every student receives free breakfast and lunch every school day. It’s one small but important way we ensure that every child has access to healthy meals, every day. But we also know that the need doesn’t stop when the school day ends — and that’s where our community steps up.

Local Food Resources:

In Bethel, we show up for one another. It’s who we are. Together with our partners and neighbors, we’re working to make sure every family has access to the food and resources they need right now.

  • Local Food: You can view a list of Bethel-area food resources here for a list of local food pantries, community meal programs, and other supports available in our area
  • Bethel Family Resource Center Pantry Event: The Bethel Family Resource Center at Clear Lake Community Center will have its next pantry event  on Thursday, November 6, from 4-6 p.m.
  • Additional Food Assistance: If you or your family anticipate needing food assistance in November or December, please fill out this form. We will be coordinating with community partners to try and connect families with resources in the coming weeks.

For community members who would like to help meet growing needs, Bethel School District, in partnership with the Bethel Education Foundation (BEF), will host a Community Food Drive on Saturday, November 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clear Lake Community Center. Food collected and purchased at this event will be distributed to families the following week (Nov. 10-16).

At the drive, we will be collecting:

  • Dry pasta and pasta sauce

  • Dry rice and dry beans

  • Canned meat and canned tuna

  • Canned fruit

  • Cereal and oatmeal

  • Flour and masa (corn flour)

  • Cooking oil

  • Shelf-stable milk

  • White or wheat bread

  • Peanut butter and jelly

  • Sugar and salt

  • Canned beans (black, pinto, refried)

  • Canned vegetables (corn, green beans)

  • Canned meals (soups, ravioli, chili)

  • Boxed or microwaveable meals (mac and cheese, ramen, etc.)

If you’re able to give, please consider donating through the Bethel Education Foundation (BEF) — 100% of donations will go directly toward food for Bethel families. Donations can be made by check and mailed or dropped off at the Bethel District Office with "food" in the memo, or on BEF's website.  Food collected and purchased will be distributed the week following the drive.

If you or your family anticipate needing food assistance in November or December, please fill out this form. We will be coordinating with community partners to try and connect families with resources in the coming weeks.

We know this is a stressful and uncertain time for many. But as we’ve seen time and again, our Bethel community is at its best when we come together to care for one another. If you need help, please reach out. If you can help, please do.

We are Bethel — and we take care of each other.

With gratitude,
Kraig Sproles
