Willamette High School

Wolverine Pageant

A Legacy of Giving: The Wolverine Pageant
The Wolverine Pageant is a cherished tradition at Willamette High School, launched during the second year of the local Kids Helping Kids program through PeaceHealth Medical Center and Children’s Miracle Network. The pageant’s roots trace back to 1993 at Sheldon High School, where it began as a restorative justice “punishment” for a student. Instead of facing traditional consequences, the student turned his retribution into a charitable event, creating a lighthearted “spoof” on the traditional beauty pageant format. Initially, the pageant featured male contestants who competed with silly dances, skits, and interviews.

Over time, the program evolved, expanding to include participants of all genders, fostering a more inclusive environment. Today, Willamette is home to the longest-running pageant program in the area, a testament to its resilience—surviving the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing to thrive into a new era.

Since its inception, the Wolverine Pageant has raised over $500,000 for Children’s Miracle Network, thanks to the dedication of over 1,000 students who have participated in its 31-year history.

About the Wolverine Pageant
Each year, a dedicated group of adult advisors works alongside a select group of high school students for approximately four months to fundraise for Children’s Miracle Network. The “season” typically runs from November through March, culminating in the highly anticipated Pageant Night, which features a silent auction and a spectacular stage show. The pageant is divided into various segments, offering a unique twist on the traditional beauty pageant. These segments include an opening dance number, a costume showcase with a child, skits, interviews, and more!

In addition to weekly practices and group fundraisers, participants have the special opportunity to tour the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and pediatric ward at PeaceHealth Medical Center at Riverbend. This eye-opening experience is a vital part of the program, allowing the students to see firsthand the impact of their fundraising efforts and the life-saving equipment made possible by their support.

How to Get Involved

JOIN
Each October, students have the opportunity to apply for the Wolverine Pageant, with the group typically finalized by November. Seniors are invited to apply as contestants, while students from all grades can apply to be coordinators. Applications require two teacher recommendations. Contestants take on the role of the “face” of the program, while coordinators work behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly. Once selected, participants are expected to maintain a minimum C average in all classes. If a student’s grade falls below a “C,” they may be asked to sit out of practice to focus on completing assignments or seeking help from advisors. Continued difficulty with grades may result in dismissal from the program.

ATTEND
Throughout the season, we host a variety of exciting group fundraisers, including the Lip Sync Battle, Bingo Night with a Dessert Auction, the Staff vs. Student Basketball Game, and of course, the Pageant Night featuring a Silent Auction. Participants also help raise funds by collecting change, selling bracelets, and offering calendars. You can make a difference by attending these events and purchasing items. Thanks to a small participant fee, 100% of the proceeds go directly to Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), directly benefiting our neighbors here in Lane County.

DONATE
Are you a business owner or a crafty individual with unique items just waiting to be shared? Consider donating to the Wolverine Pageant! Whether big or small, every donation makes a difference, and we are grateful for it all. Your contributions help support our cause and make our events even more exciting!
